Bed and breakfasting in a sleepy little town

“Mayberry was a sleepy little town when I first knew it.”  - To Kill a Mockingbird

‘Sleepy little town’ is the perfect description of Comfort, Texas, - a town about 50 miles outside of San Antonio where I just spent the last two nights at a top-rated bed and breakfast with my husband.

Here’s a sampling of what we did.

Sat on a swing down by the creek on which the bed and breakfast is located and ate breakfast, watched deer, listened to birds, talked.

Strolled through downtown Fredricksburg, Texas.  Bought a few things, ate chicken salad sandwiches and Amaretto Peach Pecan ice cream at Deer River Pecan Company.

Drove to Kerrville – a neighboring sleepy little town but big enough to have a movie theatre - to see ‘Super 8,’ the perfect date movie since I hung onto Jeff’s arm and practically jumped into his lap several times during the show.  My favorite feature of the theatre was a huge fish tank in the lobby with benches facing it.  It was merely an odd curiosity at first glance, but when our movie theatre wasn’t cleaned and ready to go until five minutes after the movie was scheduled to begin, we found ourselves sitting on the benches watching the fish for quite some time.  That tank served a valuable purpose.

Ate fabulous German cuisine at Little Gretel’s in Boerne.  Ever since serving my mission in Vienna, I immensely enjoy a good Weinerschnitzel with Spaetzle and Apfelstrudel for dessert.

Swam in the pool at the B&B.  Perfect temperatures, perfect weather, beautiful setting.

Read two books.

Gazed into the heavens at the big and bright stars that can be found deep in the heart of Texas sans light pollution from big cities.

Here’s a sampling of what we didn’t do.

Pack.  Unpack.  Drive kids to sports camps or the library or swimming or play dates.  Tell the kids that if I hear one more argument I’ll ship them all off to a remote African village.

When Jeff first presented me with this combined birthday/anniversary present (birthday is in June, anniversary is in August), I immediately questioned the timing of my well-meaning husband.   He knew that one of us had to be in San Antonio Saturday morning to retrieve Kirsten & a friend from EFY, so he figured he'd kill a few birds.

I knew we would be one week out from having moved, which means we would be several weeks away from being settled. In short, I was afraid it would be impossible for me to relax.

We are definitely several weeks – OK, several months – away from being settled, but it turns out the timing was perfect.  I was completely exhausted from all the stress and work from moving and would have likely collapsed in a heap on the couch for those few days anyway.

I am now officially rejuvenated, prepared to tackle the house, the kids, the rest of summer.

I have just one thing to say to my husband:

Well played.

Cute new shirt! I'm glad I could help so you could have this weekend to yourself. You need to do it more often!

Yeah for couples getaways! Although I'm enjoying this crazy 11 day family vacation, it's anything but romantic and restful. So glad you had a great time :).
