Super Groovy & Easy Tied-Dyed Paper

Emma came home from an activity at church all fired up about the craft they had done, so I let her be in charge of the activity for our next Family Night.  It took a little more prep work than a typical Family Night activity, but it was well worth the effort.  I'm not on Pinterest (where this idea may have originated) so this craft might be old news to most of you.  But to us, it was super cool and fun.  Even the teenagers loved it, but weren't so keen on getting their pics taken while "crafting."

Final Products:

A few pics & basic instructions:

Step #1:  Spread shaving cream about an 1 1/2 inches thick onto a paper plate.
Step #2:  Choose 2 colors of food coloring & put two drops of each color onto the shaving cream (obviously this two drop rule is made to be broken)

Step 3:  With a plastic knife, swirl the colors around (but not so much that they become a third color!)

Step #4:  Press the blank side of an index card (or other thick paper that fits into the area of the plate) into the glop, making sure all edges of the paper come into contact with the shaving cream.
Step #5:  Using the flat side of the knife (or even a paper towel), scrape the shaving cream off of the card.  It's as simple as that.  The ink will have already soaked into the paper.  The cards are slightly damp, so don't need much drying time.

Samples of the end results.  You basically can't go wrong, all of them turned out cool in their own way.  Fair warning, you will likely be scrubbing blotches of food coloring off your skin for the next day or so.

Happy Tie-Dying!
