See It, Love It, Buy It!! is the slogan on the envelope of the kids' school pictures that they toted home from school yesterday. Other than class pictures, I haven't purchased individual school pics in years on the very solid grounds that you get much better value for your money when you go elsewhere for pics.
Emma (3rd grade) and Seth (5th grade) are very familiar with my school-picture-buying philosophy and usually don't even ask. But for some reason, yesterday was different. They were both quite taken with their individual pictures and proceeded to barrage me with pro-picture-buying arguments as soon as they walked in the door.
Emma, who is not at all prone to over-generalizations or exaggeration, said, "This is the best picture I have ever, EVER had taken of me. It's only $12 for one sheet, which is way better than before. It even says, "Best value ever."
Seth, who is Mr. Logical, said, "I usually hate my pictures, but I actually look pretty good in this one. Come on, Mom, it's only $12."
I told them both how great they looked in their pictures, and they frankly agreed. I asked Seth how he had ever gotten so handsome, and he replied, "I'm just that awesome."
And as a final argument, Emma simply stated, "I saw it, I loved it, and now I want to buy it!"
That's one successful marketing slogan!
Rob apparently thought that their enthusiasm and optimism needed curbing, so at dinner when he saw the pics, he changed the slogan a bit to read, "See It! Hate It! Burn It!"
An opposing view, shall we say.
The verdict is still out on whether I'll be purchasing them, seeing as I haven't had pics taken of the kids (or our family) since before we moved here. This mom guilt may be what weakens my resolve. We'll see.
Here are the pics. I'm pretty sure I violated copyright laws by scanning them, but I promise not to sell reprints or print them out.
Yeah, they're just that awesome. The kids, that is.

Laughed out loud several times while reading this one. And I REALLY needed that laugh today! I especially love the big brother variation on the marketing theme. Very true to form.
I'm with you, school portraits are outrageous. AND I hate that they send it home in assumption that you will just buy it because otherwise they are throwing your child away. AND that you have to pay for it if it somehow gets damaged or lost on the way. But this year's pictures were pretty tempting for us, as well. If I hadn't just had a family session with that great Allison... I'm sure I would have caved.
I hate the cost of school pictures- I never buy them either except that they only way to get a class picture is to buy a package. So I fork over the money for the smallest package, I hate that.
Loved the saw it, hate it, burn it - true family love right there!
BTW- are you going to post a list of all the book suggestions and let us know how it went?!
Someone needs to tell the photographer to step away from the 70s... do you remember the forest accent walls?
