The Kitchen House by Kathleen GrissomMy rating: 4 of 5 stars
My sister-in-law recommended this book to me over Christmas. I devoured it in a couple days and am so happy for her recommendation.
Tackling issues of indentured servitude and slavery on a Virginia plantation, this well-researched book of historical fiction is not for the faint of heart. In fact, it broke my own heart more than once. It's a fascinating, poignant, heartbreaking book that examines the strengths and weaknesses of the human spirit.
Read it when you have a little time (because you'll likely ignore whatever responsibilities you might have for a day or two), a big box of tissue and are feeling sorry for yourself. Because I can promise you that once you've read this book, your life will be revealed to you as most amazing and most blessed.
Content note: although not explicit, the book describes rape and other violence
