Book Review: Cutting for Stone

Cutting for StoneCutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I feel like 'Cutting for Stone' belongs in the same category as books like 'The Poisonwood Bible.'  It's a multi-generational epic novel that delves into heart-wrenching issues of love, passion, race, transgression, love, forgiveness, and redemption.

Book description from Amazon:

Marion and Shiva Stone are twin brothers born of a secret union between a beautiful Indian nun and a brash British surgeon. Orphaned by their mother’s death and their father’s disappearance, bound together by a preternatural connection and a shared fascination with medicine, the twins come of age as Ethiopia hovers on the brink of revolution.

Moving from Addis Ababa to New York City and back again, Cutting for Stone is an unforgettable story of love and betrayal, medicine and ordinary miracles--and two brothers whose fates are forever intertwined.

This book is beautifully written; I read it marveling at how powerful the written word can be.  At the same time, it made me want to shake my fist at God, cry and sometimes just sit back and reflect.

I highly recommend it.

Content note:  There is definitely sex in this book.  I didn't find it necessarily gratuitous (the book is written from a male's point of view and spans the adolescent years).  But for those who might be sensitive to such subject matter, be forewarned.

I started reading this, got through the first 1/3 and have put it down. This was months ago and haven't picked it back up. Maybe I should seeing your rating. I had a hard time getting into the story.
